Fuel, like many other things, becomes less dense as it gets hotter. This means less fuel will make it into the engine by volume, and can impact engine performance pretty severely. That’s why some trucks are fitted with a 6.4 Powerstroke fuel cooler. The fuel cooler does what its name suggests and strips heat from fuel before it makes it into the vehicle’s injectors. This means the vehicle can more precisely and efficiently burn fuel in the engine itself, and ensures the optimal air to fuel ratio is being used. +Read more
A severely damaged or degraded fuel cooler for a 6.4 Powerstroke can potentially leak, but if your fuel cooler is having issues then the most common symptom is a loss of power. There’s a chance your vehicle could have difficulty starting or even misfire too.
Of course, the fuel cooler is just one part of a healthy fuel system. 6.4 Powerstroke fuel lines, like all fuel lines, will degrade over time and will eventually need to be replaced. Degraded fuel lines are likely to leak, and depending on where that leak is it could be a serious issue. A leak in the 6.4 Powerstroke injector lines is an even more serious problem, as fuel could end up coming into contact with a hot engine and cause a fire. As a result, your vehicle’s injector lines and its 6.4 Powerstroke fuel rail should be inspected for damage or corrosion at regular intervals and immediately replaced if they are found to be damaged.
