Dodge Ram pickups have had the option of being powered by a Cummins diesel engine since 1989. From 1989 until 1993 the engine was a 5.9L 12 valve. The 1994 to 1998 5.9L Cummins is one of the most sought after diesel engines. It was similar to the previous model but what set it apart was the Bosch P7100 (aka the P-Pump). It was introduced so the 5.9L could meet emission standards.+Read more
Cummins developed the 5.9L ISB to meet stricter emissions regulations. It ran all Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks from 1998 to 2002. These engines debuted the 24-valve cylinder head and replaced the P-pump with the VP44 injection pump. The common-rail version of the ISB CUMMINS 5.9L began powering Dodge Ram heavy-duty trucks in 2003 and lasted until 2007. The biggest difference with this new engine was that it relied completely on electronic controls to operate. It was also 10 dB quieter than its predecessor.
In 2004, Cummins made some changes with engine programming, the turbo in the engine, the design of the pistons and the injector spray angle so the 2004.5 TO 2007 5.9L version had some major differences. Federal emissions standards caused another change to the Cummins diesel engine. Midway in 2007, Ram diesel trucks came with a more powerful and cleaner 6.7L 24 VALVE engine. The 6.7L produced 650 lb-ft of torque at 1,500 rpm when it came out. The 2013 TO 2019 CUMMINS 6.7L engine had a boost in performance with an increase in torque and horsepower. It also came with an SCR (selective catalytic reduction) with DEF injection which increased their fuel economy by 10%
In 1989, sales of Dodge trucks were falling so in a final attempt to save their truck business, Dodge made a model that featured a huge Cummins turbodiesel engine. These straight-six engines were much more advanced than GM or Ford diesel trucks so the engineers at Dodge had to make the body and suspension a lot sturdier.
As a result, over the years the Cummins brand has become known for producing heavy-duty, dependable and high performing diesel engines. In fact, Cummins leads the world in the manufacturing of clean, reliable and highly efficient diesel truck engines. ProSource Diesel has everything you need to maintain and improve that performance year-after-year, mile-after-mile.
