Denso (as opposed to Bosch) is the manufacturer of the L5P’s common rail system and the boost is compliments of a BorgWarner turbo whereas Garrett was the manufacturer of the turbocharger in previous Duramax engines.
The Duramax L5P is a solid diesel engine that has lived up to its hype. Although off the assembly line it is an extremely powerful beast, we’ve heard that with L5P aftermarket adjustments, 600hp is attainable even with the stock turbo, injection pump and fuel injectors. It’s still too early to determine if the EGR, DPF and/or the SCR systems have improved from a reliability perspective. Time will tell.
