Corrosion around the battery terminals, we’ve all seen it. Eventually over time not addressing the problems will lead to poor charging or starting performance and you could get left stranded. Corrosion comes in different forms for our trucks, the electrical system is not excluded. Bad alternators can cause overcharging of your batteries and generate added heat, this can in turn damage the wiring harness leading to your battery. A harness that is damaged will show signs of melted insulation discolored ends etc. Undercharging can cause other issues such as not supplying enough juice to your battery and preventing your truck from starting or running eventually. The battery cables may look greenish with a white/gray corrosion surrounding the terminals. This can be caused by undercharging but also acid discharge, the conditions we operate our trucks in (road salt), chemicals used to clean under the hood etc.
While there is no rule of thumb as to when battery cables need to be replaced it is a good idea to keep in mind that your truck will be only as strong as the weakest component. So if you have upgraded your truck in ways where it demands more power and you have not looked at upgrading or replacing your power cables, look no further as we have you covered.
