Ford has released a TSB 06-14-4 updating transmission fluid spec back on June 29th, 2006, and changing the fluid requirement for E40D and 4R100 transmission from MERCON ATF to MERCON V. This TSB is attached and can be viewed in the Technical Documents tab.

DIY Procedure

A comprehensive vehicle scanner may be required to clear fault codes and help in monitoring temperatures during the fluid replacement process on OBDII vehicles. We have awesome DIY options from Autel available on ProSource Diesel. Our recommendation is the MX808 as it will help you complete 95% of all DIY projects with its versatility and utility. Below is the basic transmission fluid and filter procedure. Please see our Technical Docs tab for more in-depth PDFs in regards to this DIY. 

The document presented is for a 4R100 transmission however the procedures shown are applicable to the E40D equipped trucks. There is mention in the article of an external in-line filter that is located between the transmission and the transmission oil cooler. Not all trucks came with this solution, likely it may have been added at a later time while in for repairs related to the transmission or your truck may have an aftermarket filter installed. The document also shows the procedure for draining the torque converter. Not all trucks have a drain port that will allow for this procedure.

This kit includes 10 liters (10.56 Quarts) of fluid. Most standard transmission filter replacements will require 8-9 Liters (8.45-9.51 Quarts), this will depend on the vehicle options and configuration, whether cooler lines were added or extended, etc. If the Torque Converter is drained this may need 2-3 Liters (2.11-3.17 Quarts) more fluid. The total capacity of the system from a dry fill ranges from 12.8-16.7 Liters (13.52-17.64 Quarts), again this will vary by options and years.
