Ford’s 6.4 Powerstroke turbo replaced the automaker’s 6.0-liter diesel engine. Introduced for the 2008 model year and the last engine that International produced for Ford’s Super Duty pickup, the 6.4-liter produced 350 horsepower and 650 pounds-feet of torque. Through a twin sequential turbocharger setup that helped reduce lag, a low-pressure turbo worked with a larger high-pressure variable geometry turbo. However, the short-lived 6.4 Powerstroke twin turbo engine presented several problems. One of the most common issues involves the up-pipes. The up-pipes had zero flexibility, causing cracking at the expansion joints. In addition, oil coking would block the turbo’s oil drains, sometimes resulting in the turbo’s premature demise.
