While a turbocharger does a great job at forcing more air into the engine, there are other components that make the turbo more efficient. Your truck’s intercooler is part of its 6.4 Powerstroke air intake system. As a result, it will need regular maintenance with some parts needing more regular replacement than others. For example, the 6.4 Powerstroke air filter should be replaced as part of your truck’s regular service.
The air filter is there to ensure small, unwanted, particles don’t make their way towards the engine. This results in the filter getting clogged with said particles. Drawing air through a clogged filter is far harder than pulling it through a fresh one, and the part is very cheap. So replacing it at least once a year, or every 12,000 miles, is recommended.
Another part that may fail after a while is the 6.4 powerstroke intercooler boots. The boots are used to connect everything together but can crack or perish. Even a small leak can greatly limit the system’s efficiency, so they will eventually need replacing. 6.4 Powerstroke intercooler pipes tend to be very robust and can last as long as your vehicle lasts.
However, a 6.4 Powerstroke intercooler pipe upgrade might be a relatively cheap and easy way to get a bit of extra performance out of your truck. For instance, an aftermarket 6.4 Powerstroke hot side intercooler pipe can allow the system to draw more air through, which ultimately means more air is being chilled and delivered to the turbocharger.
