As its name suggests, the glow plug control module 7.3 is responsible for the ford 7.3 glow plugs function. It acts as a liaison between the plugs themselves and the engine control unit. The module activates the plugs when the key is turned, and controls the current heading into their plugs and their temperature, before switching the plugs off when the engine is deemed hot enough. As for how it controls the plugs, the control module uses a 7.3 Powerstroke glow plug relay to switch the current to the plugs on and off. Glow plug faults, especially if all plugs are affected, can often be traced to the control unit or the 7.3 glow plug relay.
Although they are quite a hardy component, 7.3 Powerstroke glow plugs can sometimes fail. Failed glow plugs require replacing, and when that time comes you should make sure you buy well made plugs from a reputable manufacturer. Glow plugs tend to be made from ceramic, and poorly made plugs can shatter inside the engine cylinder. Obviously, having hundreds of bits of hard, shattered, ceramic inside your engine is a major issue. So make sure you’re buying quality glow plugs for your 7.3 Powerstroke.
