The turbo diesel was a great step forward, but a lot had to change to make it work. The turbocharger is the main component people think of, and it does a great job of forcing air into the engine. But air alone won’t make an engine run. You also need fuel, and with your truck’s turbocharged engine that comes from 7.3 Powerstroke fuel injectors. +Read more
The injectors for the 7.3 Powerstroke spray an optimal amount of fuel into the engine’s cylinder. Exactly how much depends on the engine’s tuning. It has to be balanced with the amount of air that the turbocharger is sending into the engine. Too much, and you’ll have unburnt fuel making its way through the exhaust system. Too little, and the engine will lose a lot of power.
As with other parts, you don’t have to go with stock Ford 7.3 injectors. Numerous aftermarket injectors for the 7.3 Powerstroke are available, with some being better and some worse than the stock option. It’s worth pointing out that with the 7.3L Powerstroke, Motorcraft injectors are the stock option. So if you want to keep your truck close to how it arrived from the factory, Motorcraft 7.3 injectors are the obvious choice. It’s also worth noting that, as with many other engine bolts, 7.3 injector hold-down bolts should not be reused. Damage may occur if you attempt to use your old hold-down bolts again, and it’s a very cheap part so why take the risk?
Powerstroke engines also use Ford 7.3 injector cups. The injector cups are pretty vital as they provide a barrier between the engine’s cooling system and the fuel system. If one fails, you’ll have coolant in your cylinders and fuel in your cooling system.
