For this generation of the turbo-diesel engine, the 7.3 Powerstroke injectors could fail prematurely due to water contamination in the fuel. Routinely draining the water separator located on the fuel filter canister can help prevent this problem. Also, as the O-rings on the injectors wear over time, they can leak and allow oil from the engine to enter the fuel tank.
Along with the slight loss of power or long crank times caused by a clogged 7.3 Powerstroke fuel filter, the filter housing can crack and leak fuel, requiring replacement. In addition, the engine-mounted fuel pump is also known to fail.
