A common issue for the 24-valve engine involves the 5.9 Cummins lift pump. When the lift pump fails, it causes more stress on the injection pump when fuel is circulating to the injectors. The lift pump for these model years was mounted to the side of the engine, adding excessive heat to the unit and promoting premature wear. In addition, the location requires the pump to move fuel a long distance to the injectors, contributing to more wear.
