In a diesel LLY engine, the pistons serve a couple of purposes. While a gas engine uses spark plugs to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the cylinders, a diesel engine’s piston violently compresses the air-fuel mixture. This compression creates heat, which ignites the mixture and pushes the piston back down. If the piston or cylinder head is damaged, the engine won’t be able to hold enough pressure and will not function. A damaged connecting rod will also reduce the piston’s range of motion and stop an engine from working.
If you’re planning on replacing a part of an engine, like the head gasket, a LLY Duramax rebuild kit is probably your best option. A rebuild kit contains all of the LLY parts you will need for the job. With things like a head gasket, you’ll want to replace every possible part, even if some of the parts appear to be in good condition. As the labor for these jobs is very expensive, while the parts are relatively cheap, it makes sense to ensure as many parts as possible are replaced to maximize the amount of time until another replacement is needed. A good LLY rebuild kit will save you money if multiple parts need replacing; it will also save you time as you won’t have to track down a wide range of parts or delay a job because a minor part is missing.
