Foreign debris, excessive temperatures, and overspeed operation can harm the turbo’s compressor wheel and housing. Objects that enter the turbocharger at high speed can lead to damage and imbalance. In addition, dirty oil running through the system can allow the turbo’s impeller to strike against the housing.
Heat can also be a major factor in turbo failure. Because of the amount of exhaust heat in the turbo, there is a lot of contraction and expansion as the temperatures decrease and increase. This, along with a turbocharger that is worked beyond its operating limits, can result in fatigue failure or cracks in the housing.
